Caerphilly County Borough residents came out in droves to soak up the sun and the atmosphere as the Olympic Torch Relay made its way through Caerphilly on Saturday May 26th.

An estimated 30,000 residents lined the streets from Watford Road to Nant Garw Road, with a huge swell of residents cheering the Olympic Flame into the iconic landmark, Caerphilly Castle. The atmosphere was electric as the Olympic Torch Relay convoy made its way through the crowds, with the official sponsors rallying the masses, even the Met Police joined in with the celebration.

Council Leader, Harry Andrews said, "What a momentous occasion, to see so many Caerphilly County Borough residents enjoying our moment to shine was truly electrifying. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, it is wonderful to know that so many residents have been inspired by the Olympic Flame."

After the Olympic Torch Relay had made its glorious journey through the town, residents continued to celebrate at the Food and Flower Festival, enjoying tastes and blooms from across the world. Street entertainers kept the exciting atmosphere as residents made their way through the festival, and onto the Sport Caerphilly Olympic Village and Blue Peter Big Olympic Tour.

The Blue Peter Big Olympic Tour brought an extra special guest to join Caerphilly for their moment to shine. Five times Olympic Gold Medal winner Sir Steve Redgrave visited Caerphilly Castle and the Visit Caerphilly Tourist Information Centre before taking part in live shows throughout the day.

At the Sport Caerphilly Olympic Village residents could try their hand at a variety of Olympic sports, from blind football, to archery and gymnastics. Whilst urban street sports stars SBX entertained the crowds with daring displays and world record attempts.

Praise has been flooding from residents who enjoyed the day, with one resident saying, "We had a great day on Saturday, well done to you all I think it all went well, seeing the torch was great and the Food Festival was good as well, thank you to you all!"
