Thousands of people are expected to converge on Caerphilly next Saturday (26th May) to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay and enjoy the other exciting events taking place in and around the town centre throughout the day.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is making residents, businesses, shoppers and visitors to Caerphilly Town Centre aware of several road closures which will be in operation on Saturday 26th May.

St Martins Road, Nantgarw Road, Cardiff Road, Castle Street and Caerphilly Town Centre will all be closed to vehicles during the much-anticipated Olympic Torch Relay.

The relay is due to enter Caerphilly via Watford Road / St Martin's Road at approximately 9:50am and will proceed through the town centre along Cardiff Road, Castle Street and Nantgarw Road. It is anticipated that the Olympic Torch Relay will be leaving Caerphilly, via Nantgarw Road by 10:30am.

Access for vehicles on to the designated route will not be permitted between approximately 9:40am and 10:40am. As the Olympic Torch Relay passes through the town centre, traffic restrictions will be removed to allow the passage of vehicles around the town centre as part of a 'rolling' road closure.

The council is working closely with the Olympic organisers LOCOG, the BBC, transport providers and the Emergency Services to minimise the disruption around the town centre, but also to maximise the benefits this high profile event will bring to the town centre.

To coincide with this historic event the council will be co-ordinating a new Food Festival event in the town centre and hosting a 'Blue Peter' Olympic Roadshow on the Owain Glyndwr Sports Field alongside an Olympic Sports Village run by the council's Sports Development team.

These events will also involve road closures and diversions on Saturday 26th May. The Food Festival will bring stalls bursting with sizzling sounds, delicious smells, and tongue tingling tastes through the town centre and will cause Cardiff Road and Castle Street to be closed between midnight on Friday 25th May and 10pm on Saturday 26th May.

The fun filled activities that Blue Peter and Sports Development will bring to Crescent Road will cause a one way system to be in operation along the road, from it's junction with Crescent Road Car Park to the junction at Nantgarw Road between 9:00am and 6:00pm.

Buses will still run on the day using Clive Street, Ludlow Street and the one way system on Crescent Road as an alternative route out of Caerphilly Town Centre.

Park and Ride facilities will also be available throughout the day.
