Bargoed is currently at the centre of a multi million pound regeneration programme, which is transforming this important shopping and service centre. The first phase in the Greater Bargoed Community Regeneration Scheme was completed in the summer of 2009.
Bargoed is located in the north of Caerphilly County Borough within the Upper Rhymney Valley. It is the largest district town centre within the valley serving the surrounding communities of Aberbargoed, Gilfach and Pengam.
Bargoed grew rapidly during the coal industry boom of the early twentieth century and earned its reputation as a significant retail centre for the area, attracting both national and independent retailers. The colliery closed in 1977 and the site has been reclaimed. A new 100 acres country park has been created on the site of 3 former collieries. Visitors to the park benefit from new cycleways and footpaths, which have been constructed as part of the regeneration scheme.

The programme of regeneration – the Greater Bargoed Community Regeneration Scheme – includes the new road, Angel Way, integrated transport links with the new bus station, improved access to the railway station and a new Park & Ride Facility. In addition to significant improvements to the transport infrastructure, a new retail development plateau has been constructed – and this is only the start …
Exciting plans have recently been unveiled for the redevelopment of the Baptist Chapel on Hanbury Road into a new library and community facility for Bargoed and the wider population.
Bargoed looks set to celebrate the news that supermarket giant Morrisons is to create a new 55,000 square foot flagship store in the town centre.
