Developing a new landmark building

Bargoed’s Big Idea continues with a radical vision for the back of the building – it will be re-designed as a new “front”. The rear of the building will be carefully stripped away and replaced with a contemporary extension, which advertises the presence of this new state–of-the–art public facility.

This new “front” will be located on the Hanbury Road Car Park side and will provide a landmark tower clearly visible from the new road, Angel Way and across the valley. The extension will be constructed of modern materials and has been designed not to mimic the existing architecture but to give a clear and transparent signal that this is a 21st Century facility for the community of Bargoed and beyond.

The new extension will have an entrance at street level with a lift and staircase, which will serve the whole building. The library café will be located directly above the new entrance and it will include a large “picture” bay window, which overhangs the street and provides outstanding views across and along the valley to Parc Coetir Bargoed.

The “Teens” library will be located above the café – and again it will be highly recognisable from the street. Office facilities for the library will be located at the top of the new extension.

The rear signage on the facia of the extension has been designed to replicate the title on the side of a book and at night it is expected that the entire tower will look especially dramatic because of the expanse of glass and hence light.
