Family History Resources

The Family History Resources is the main centre for Family History research in the county borough and the Resources Centre has previously attracted not only local residents who are researching their family history but also numerous international visitors from as far a field as New Zealand, South Africa and America.

It is proposed that the new Family History Resources Centre will be located in the quietude of the space adjacent to the new Worship area and will be part of the new Reference Library and Learning area. The plans include a mezzanine level with intimate study modules.

The Centre will hold local census returns for the years 1841-1901 and the St Catherine’s House Indexes (Civil Registration Indexes) for the years 1837-2002 - which include births, marriages and deaths. For marriage records prior to 1837 there will be access to the Glamorgan Marriage Index.

Inscription outside the Hanbury Road Baptist Chapel

The Local Index of soldiers who died in the First Word War as well as access to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website will be available.

Other resources include local parish registers on microfiche, monumental inscriptions, tithe maps and historical Ordnance Survey maps which will include most of the old Parishes that are now located within Caerphilly County Borough.

A number of pre-1950 local newspapers will be available on microfilm and these include the New Tredegar, Caerphilly and Bargoed Journals between 1904 and 1943 and Merthyr Express 1882 - 1900 and 1902 – 1950. Early editions of the South Wales Echo from 1887 – 1988 are also available on microfiche.

Please note that all these services are available from the Resources Centre’s temporary accommodation at the Winding House Museum, New Tredegar. Please telephone 01443 875548 to secure a session.
