Bargoed in figures

Bargoed is the third largest town in Caerphilly County Borough and is located in the northern part of the county borough in the heart of the Rhymney Valley. The town is central to the neighbouring communities of Gilfach Fargoed, Aberbargoed and Pengam and is located on the main route leading north to the Head of the Valleys road and has a population of 44,000 within a 10 minutes drive. This population is set to rise with new development sites allocated for residential use. It has a retail catchment of over 270,000 residents and, additionally, it is located between 2 country parks, with the potential to capture large numbers of visitors to the area. Just 2 miles up the road from the town centre, Parc Cwm Darren attracts over 100,000 visitors a year, whilst the county borough’s newest country park, Parc Coetir Bargoed, will soon include a new cycle way as part of the GBCRS scheme.

From August 2006, Footfall data is available from two locations in Bargoed Town Centre.

To assist investors, leading Retail Consultants CACI was commissioned to produce an individual market summary report for Bargoed. This comprehensive report uses the ACORN profile system to establish a demographic profile of the town. A copy of the GOAD Consumer Retail Expenditure (Course) Report 2004 for the Bargoed area (by Experian) is also available upon request. The 2006 GOAD data is currently being prepared.

The town has diverse shopping on offer with a wide range of independent businesses mixed with established high street names including; Dorothy Perkins, Burtons, Peacocks and Superdrug. The ambitious Welsh based supermarket chain CK Supermarkets opened a new store in the town in 2006, further demonstrating the confidence investors have in the redevelopment of Bargoed as a retail centre for the Northern Rhymney Valley area. A new retail plateau is under construction as part of the GBCRS.
