Footfall data

Bargoed pedestrian counting systems location
Pedestrian Counting system locations.

In August 2006 a new electronic pedestrian counting system was introduced into each of the principle towns in the county borough.  Market leader, Footfall (an Experian Company) operates the system and each week the data is compiled into a Footfall Index.  This Index provides continuous information about the change in visitor numbers and enables monitoring and assessment of how events affect the retail business.  The figures can be compared on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis and the data is provided to retailers across the 3 towns.  Bargoed’s Footfall figures, by their consistency, have shown that it has a loyal and local customer base, which is less affected by the seasonal and weather related peaks and troughs as seen in the other town centres.  However, it is recognised that at present, Bargoed is not maximising the potential residential and visitor market available.

In March 2008 a second Footfall Counter was installed in the south of the town, which will be used to benchmark and assess the impact of the new development.  This Footfall counter was funded through the Heads of the Valleys programme.  The Footfall for Bargoed averages 15,000.
