Investment opportunities

Caerphilly County Borough offers excellent retail opportunities for business, with the local authority recognising the importance of the retail sector to the wider regional economy.

Bargoed is the third largest town in the county borough and the only district centre in the area – serving a wider locality than its immediate settlement. Historically, the town has grown and flourished alongside a burgeoning coal industry during the first half of the twentieth century and it has inherited some landmark buildings from that era. Currently, the main retail and service areas are located in a linear High Street on the west side of the valley.

Bargoed benefits from a Town Centre Development Manager who co-ordinates the strategic and operational needs of the 3 principal town centres in the county borough.

In September 2009 "Town Centres - Unique Places" (PDF, 2Mb) was published. This strategy for town centre management takes a holistic approach to integrate all the elements that make a town unique and sets out the vision for town centre development in the county borough’s principal towns. Each of these towns has been uniquely branded and is proactively marketed for both investment and to increase footfall. The radical and far reaching design concepts put forward by Consultants Camlin Lonsdale in 2005 have been taken forward through the Greater Bargoed Community Regeneration Scheme to transform the town into a vibrant place to live, work and visit.

A new retail development plateau, bus and train station are currently under construction. There are also proposals to re-develop the former Hanbury Cinema complex into quality mixed offices on four floors.
