One-way system: Hanbury Road/High Street

The investment that has been made in Angel Way has removed the need for much of the traffic through the town centre, providing an opportunity to introduce changes to the shopping centre to make it more pedestrian friendly.

A new one-way traffic system was introduced in September 2009 as part of the ongoing works to regenerate the town centre.

The one-way system commences at Hanbury Square and continues along Hanbury Road and High Street to the new mini roundabout at the entrance to St Gwladys pay and display car park at the northern end of the town.

Proposals for the one-way system formed part of a major exhibition, which went on display in Bargoed in March 2009. This scheme is designed to improve traffic flow, ease congestion and allow the width of the road to be reduced so that wider pavements can be created for shoppers.

The main street through the town centre will become much more pedestrian friendly. the new one-way system will allow the width of the road to be reduced and wider pavements created.

A number of loading, parking and disabled bays will be located along the eastern side to create a clean line on the carriageway.

Important landmark buildings such as Hanbury Road Baptist Chapel have been identified and these proposals seek to enhance their setting.
In particular, the area to the front of the chapel will be designed to frame the building and highlight its architectural quality.

The area outside the Spar store will be redesigned to create an attractive square with a sitting area placed amongst an array of trees. The square will also have the potential to accommodate a café culture atmosphere.

Funding for a range of regeneration work was secured in January 2010. The £8.3 million funding package includes £3.2 million from the European Regional Development Fund and £2.5 million of Targeted Match Funding through the Welsh Assembly Government.
