Public Realm

The radical regeneration process, which is taking place in Bargoed will create a lively environment by improving the public space and it will also increase pedestrian space throughout the town.  The new development plateau is designed to include an important pedestrian link with Bargoed high street.

This pedestrian link will be fully accessible with both steps and ramps and will include “rest landings” and additional seating areas.  The pedestrian link will not only connect the plateau with the high street but it will also open up views of the high street, plateau development and country park.

The connection with the valley and country park will also be reinforced by the inclusion of several lookout viewpoints and a walkway along the newly created town wall on the side of the plateau.  Footpaths will traverse the site and the various parking zones will be designed to break up the visual dominance of cars.

Public art has already been used in Bargoed to signal the start of the town’s regeneration and to add striking features in the country park.  The local community, 4 artists, a poet and photographer were involved in a series of artists projects in 2002/03 which were centred on the creation of a country park.  The project, “Bargoed – a landscape in waiting”, included tree planting, wall building, path laying and landscaping and produced some stunning artwork features.  A toolkit for managing public artwork projects called 'Pride of Place' has been produced and can be downloaded here (PDF, 1.8Mb).

Bargoed town’s northern gateway at St Gwadlys Gardens, has recently been landscaped and includes public art, the designs of which were developed by pupils from the local comprehensive schools Lewis Boys and Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni.

The Bargoed steps – connecting the high street with the valley – were built in 2001 and overlook the former colliery site with befitting artwork.  The artwork includes an inscribed touchstone, poetry and a vertical artwork feature.

A Public Consultation was held in March 2009 which included exciting proposals for Bargoed Town Centre. For more information about the Public Realm strategy and objectives contact: Allan Dallimore, 01495 235266
