Retail development plateau

A 2.2 hectare development plateau has been constructed at the rear of Hanbury Road. The plateau is created for mixed-use retail led uses and forms an integral part of the Greater Bargoed Community Regeneration Scheme, which will breathe new life into the town. This development plateau will be the catalyst for the regeneration of the town.

The development plateau has been constructed from material sourced from the former Bargoed Colliery tip. It has direct access from the Bargoed Newydd Viaduct, which traverses the valley from the new relief road, Angel Way. There is a new point of entry into the town from the Bargoed Newydd Viaduct via a roundabout on the Angel Way road.

A radical approach has been taken to the site so that a strong link is created between the traditional linear High Street and the new development. Hanbury Square will be incorporated into the site and a large new square will be created. This will strengthen pedestrian links to the High Street, providing continuity and creating a more pedestrian friendly environment.

Simons Development Ltd was chosen as the “preferred developer” to progress a major retail and leisure development in the town centre.

The first phase of development proposals on the retail plateau will comprise the new 56,000 sq ft Morrisons supermarket, shops, Fuel station and 390 parking spaces. The second phase proposals include a cinema and restaurant complex, commercial and residential buildings and further parking facilities.

Simons Development Ltd is expected to submit a planning application in Spring 2011.

The development site is of strategic importance for the regeneration of the town. The site’s elevated location on the side of the valley enjoys spectacular views and will be a highly visual signal that Bargoed’s Big Ideas have come to fruition.

Consultants Barton Willmore on behalf of Caerphilly County Borough Council and the Welsh Assembly Government have prepared a Development Brief. Cooke and Arkwright marketed the Development Site. Capita Symonds has provided a full range of consultancy services, including design.
