Caerphilly County Borough is served by a local rail service, which connects at Cardiff Central with all main line services to London Paddington, West & North Wales, the Midlands, the North and Scotland.
Trains run directly from Penarth and Cardiff (Central and Queen Street Stations). Track and signalling improvements have been completed, which has enabled Arriva Trains Wales to double the frequency of trains between Bargoed and Cardiff to 4 trains per hour throughout the day.

Important works to lengthen the platform at each station on the line between Rhymney and Penarth were completed in December 2008. This will enable Arriva Trains Wales to accommodate longer trains (6 carriages) and increase the current capacity considerably. To facilitate this additional capacity, a Park & Ride car park is under construction to accommodate additional commuter parking. Future schemes include a major resignalling project and a doubling of the frequency of trains north of Bargoed to achieve a half hourly service to Rhymney.
A new 150 metres long Railway Tunnel has been constructed as part of the Greater Bargoed Community Regeneration Scheme. The span comprises 13 metres and, with the retaining walls, it w ill support the new bus station and Station Road Roundabout.
