The Greater Bargoed Community Regeneration Project will help transform the town and the surrounding communities. The first phase of this multi million pound scheme has recently been completed with a key component being the £25 million new road, Angel Way.
In 2005 consultants Camlin Lonsdale undertook an extensive study, which drew up radical design concepts detailing how the existing town centre could be transformed into a vibrant place to live, work and visit. This study forms the basis of a regeneration programme to strategically develop the town over the next 10 years.
Together with partners in both the public and private sectors, the Council is committed to improving Bargoed Town Centre’s transport links and the public realm and to provide an environment, which will attract new investment into the area. To this end the Council have recently instructed Barton Willmore to identify key public realm requirements and deliver a comprehensive strategy for the public realm across the town.
This long-awaited regeneration scheme will help breathe new life into Bargoed and improve transport links in the upper Rhymney Valley. The single carriageway road, Angel Way, will be a key driver for economic growth in the area. It will greatly improve the highway network between the communities of Bargoed, Aberbargoed, Gilfach and Pengam.
The scheme will not just improve the road transport infrastructure but it will also include ambitious and far-reaching proposals that will help to transform the town centre of Bargoed and impact on the surrounding communities.
The main contractor for the Greater Bargoed Community Regeneration Project, Hochtief - Griffiths, has liaised with the Greater Bargoed Community First Partnership and the Town Centre Management Group for local input into the project and also to identify where local unemployed people could benefit from jobs created. Capita Symonds has provided a full range of consultancy services including the design. The Greater Bargoed Communities First Partnership is made up of statutory, voluntary and community representatives, with a remit to address the physical and social regeneration of the area.
The Welsh Assembly Government is funding the 2.2 km road scheme with a Transport Grant. The Retail Plateau is being funded through the Welsh Assembly Government’s Department of Economy & Transport. To facilitate the retail development the Council are receiving funding from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Heads of the Valleys Programme. This programme has also assisted in funding this website. The Greater Bargoed Communities First Partnership has been instrumental in promoting both the new road scheme and also the Bargoed Big Idea marketing campaign by providing funding through the Area Forum Budget.
