'Wireless' radio set

Radio

Radio, also known as 'the wireless', became a feature of many homes during the 1920’s and 30’s. Radio broadcasting to the public began in Britain in 1922 and the first broadcast from Cardiff was in February 1923. Many people can recall the excitement of their first home-made radio, set with its grid bias battery and accumulator, which had to be recharged weekly. In 1932, the Pontypridd Radio Central Exchange Ltd extended their service to Caerphilly. This was a radio relay service, which was transmitted by wires from the radio receiving station at Pontypridd. The service gave good reception.
