Level crossing - Crumlin

Crumlin / Crymlyn

(from crymu+llyn)

The name derives from the shape of a pool on the valley floor, possibly near the bridge. 'Crwm' means curved or twisted and the form 'crymu' means 'to bend'. The English name has evolved from a mis-spelling of the Welsh name by mapmakers who wrote the name as it would sound in English. The place name was recorded as 'Crymlin' (1630), 'Crumlyn’s bridge' (1631) and 'Pont Grymlyn' (1710).
