The project to open up our woods happened because Argoed Community Council, with help from Caerphilly County Borough Council's Countryside & Landscape Service, managed to obtain a grant from Cydcoed - Woods for all.
In all we managed to get £250,000 to pay for much needed work to make the woods people friendly. Most of this money has been spent on improving paths. We’ve had to clear back undergrowth (ahh, that’s where the path was!), improve the drainage and surface on some paths (no more bottomless puddles), and sort out miles of fencing and drystone walls to stop farm animals wandering in and chomping up all the young trees.
On top of all this, we pulled local teachers together to write a teachers pack for primary schools to use on a visit to the woods. And we’ve even created an outdoor classroom so that lessons can be taken in the woods - how cool is that?
