Machen Forge trail
A 5 mile circular walk around the quiet village and countryside of Machen. Discover the hidden past through local people's reminiscences.
Machen was forged from iron and coal. It's peace today belies its hot and fiery past. Follow the Machen Forge Trail around the villages of Machen and Waterloo and the peaceful countryside of the Rhymney Valley. Step into the past and discover the people who made Machen.
We have created a map and route directions which will allow you to follow the Machen Forge Trail without getting lost.
Sirhowy Valley Walk
A challenging 27-mile linear way-marked walk from Newport
to Tredegar with spectacular views of the Sirhowy Valley.
Raven Walk
A challenging 12 mile circular walk around the Ebbw and Sirhowy Valleys. Great views across the Bristol Channel and north to the Brecon Beacons. The original leaflet is available by post only - a new version is being produced at the moment.
Rymney River Circular Walk
The Rhymney River Circular Walk is a nine-mile circular walk around the lower Rhymney Valley. The short climbs through dappled woodland reward the walker with panoramic views of the valley floor and the archaeological heritage of the area.
Rhymney Valley Ridgeway Walk
A walk around the Caerphilly Basin across the Rhymney Valley. The walk follows countryside paths, rural lanes, through Beech woodland and across panoramic mountain tops. Leaflet available by post.
Alien Invasion Trail
A short children's walk around Pen-y-fan Pond Country
Park. Discover the 8 aliens lurking in the park and work out
who the hidden ninth is and win a badge! Ask for a leaflet
at the kiosk (summer only) or by post throughout the year.
Escape to.
5 to 8 mile circular walks in Caerphilly County Borough.
Each route is waymarked with an Escape to…arrow and each route makes a great day's walk. The routes are described assuming you are walking in a clockwise direction, apart form Escape to…Mynydd Machen. Public transport information included on the maps but please check times by contacting the travel operator before you begin your journey. The weather in the valleys can be changeable so you'll need waterproofs and stout footwear.
There are plenty of pubs and shops along the routes or close by but it's always advisable to take food and plenty to drink. Please follow the countryside code as you walk and remember to take your camera and binoculars.
