Owain Glyndwr Girls Football Festival

Girls celebrate at the successful launch of the new playing fields

39 teams took part in the festival representing the 14 clubs who signed up to take part in the launch of the Owain Glyndwr site, from three local authorities including Caerphilly, Newport and Blaenau Gwent. 390 girls participated in the football took place alongside a variety of different activities including a climbing wall, fastest shot competition, a bouncy castle and many, many more.

Dave Phenis, Sports Development Manager said “Over £250,000 of Sportlot Capital funding has been spent here to upgrade the facilities. Priority on the site will now be given specifically for development of women and girls football. The launch has provided a fantastic opportunity for the girls in Caerphilly County Borough and other local clubs to really enjoy these new facilities.”

The event was a massive success, Andrew Diggle, Women and Girls Football Development Officer, who organised the day said, “it has been a huge success. The event it is a credit to all of the clubs, who work tirelessly to ensure that the girls have the opportunity to participate. The success of today is down to their commitment.”

The Mayor of Caerphilly, Counsellor John Bevan was at the event to present each of the clubs with a medal and complementary football, which were donated by the event sponsor Lords International.

A special thanks must go to Caerphilly Castle Football Club for their support of the event.
