Race for Health was a healthy success!

Walkers enjoy the beautiful scenery at the Race for Health

09.08.2005

On the beautiful morning of August 7th 2005 Parc Cwm Darren was the main attraction to many tourists, campers and local families. Over 500 people attended the event throughout the day with the emphasis on promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles to the people of Caerphilly county borough. The main event was the junior fun run and then the 5k Fun Run, Walk and Jog. There were over 100 competitors ranging from age 6 all the way up to 78 years old between the two races, which covered a beautiful route all through the parc woodlands and around the lake. The local cheerleading club from New Tredegar cheered in each competitor and everyone came over the finish line with a huge smile, a t-shirt and a goody bag!

For those not so keen to complete the 5k were not left bored as they had the opportunity to try out the rowing challenge put on by New Tredegar and Heolddu Leisure Centre, Tai Chi, Dance with the ‘On The Move’ Clubs, Salsasize, Legs Bums and Tums and even soccer skills with Draig the big Dragon which the kids loved.

Within a fantastic Healthy Living Centre Marquee there were many information stands handing out advice on healthy eating whilst giving out fresh fruit smoothies, body calming remedies and even advice on those who felt inspired to give up smoking.

The Sports and Health development teams were able to promote all the opportunities available to the people highlighting that everything that they were able to try then they can actually go on and do in the areas in which they live.

The day was a complete success and we hope next year will be just as good or even better!
