Gwent Dragons host rugby masterclass at Heolddu Comprehensive
11.05.2007
Players from the Gwent Dragons squad visited Heolddu Comprehensive on Friday 11th May 2007 to deliver a TAG rugby masterclass to local school children.
More than 100 pupils attended from 2 of the feeder primary schools. Pupils from Park Primary and Gilfach Fargoed attended in order to improve their rugby skills.
Community coaches from across the borough along with Rugby Development Officer, James Chapron assisted players from the Gwent Dragons with their coaching.
The pupils from the two feeder schools developed their rugby skills with the assistance of the Dragons rugby players by taking part in TAG rugby activities. The Dragons were also assisted by female pupils from the sixth form in Heolddu Comprehensive.
The event linked in with the Physical Education and School Sport (PESS) initiative, the 5x60 Secondary school sport extra-curricular programme and the Dragons also promoted Dragon Sport TAG rugby as a means to becoming physically active.
Michael Owen from the Gwent Dragons commented, “The boys really enjoy these types of events. Its great to see so many young boys and girls playing rugby. One or two of these children might also play for the Dragons in the future. Its fantastic for the game in Gwent.”
Sports Development Manager, David Phenis said, “The Dragons players coming out to the schools really shows their shift in focus to the wider community. Having the Dragons promoting sport will raise the profile of school sport and hopefully encourage more youngsters to participate in sport and become physically active. Heolddu is the next school to join our Active Young People schools where the school will benefit from PESS, 5x60, Dragon Sport as well as the assistance of Caerphilly Sports Development.“
Players from the Gwent Dragons will be visiting more Comprehensives in the future.
