Badminton star lends a hand to sport scheme
18.05.2007
Welsh badminton champion Kelly Morgan is hoping to create a new rising star in the sport by teaching badminton to pupils at a Caerphilly county borough comprehensive school.
The retired player from Pontypridd was approached by Welsh Badminton who needed someone to help raise the profile of badminton in local schools as part of the 5x60 scheme.
Kelly’s class at Lewis Girls Comprehensive School takes place at Sue Noake Leisure Centre in Ystrad Mynach on Monday afternoons between 3pm-4pm and will run until the end of the summer.
Kelly said, “Teaching badminton to the pupils at the school is great. I really enjoy it. The 5x60 scheme is a brilliant initiative as it gives young people the chance to try sports that they might not have considered trying otherwise. When I was in school there was really only netball and hockey whereas now they can get a variety.”
The 5x60 scheme is part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s initiative to get 90 per cent of comprehensive school pupils to take part in 60 minutes of sport and physical activity, five times a week by 2023.
All 5x60 activities in the county borough are run by coaches and instructors from clubs within the local community. This gives school children the opportunity to access their local club recreationally or socially.
