Youngsters get active!

Dance sessions are proving popular at Lewis Girls School in Ystrad Mynach

07.09.2007

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Sports Development Team is on a mission to make young people more active, more often.

The authority is working in partnership with Welsh Assembly Government and the Sports Council for Wales to deliver sport and physical activities throughout primary and comprehensive schools in the area.

The Active Young People programme is supported by three main schemes. These include PE and School Sport, Dragon Sport and the 5x60 scheme. The PE and School Sport programme supports all schools in curriculum-based activities, whereas Dragon Sport is working with 7-11 year olds in primary schools and local community clubs to ensure safe and fun activities are taking place.

The 5x60 project aims to give pupils a choice in the activity they wish to participate outside of the school day. Last year three schools in the area enjoyed the benefits of the 5x60 project, when pupils chose to take part in activities such as dance, waterpolo, table tennis and basketball, plus many more. In total, nine comprehensive schools in Caerphilly county borough have taken the scheme on board this year.

Cllr, David Hardacre, Cabinet Member for Education & Leisure, said, “All children should have the opportunity to achieve in PE, sport and physical activity and the Active Young People programme will enable them to do so. Our Sports Development Team is constantly working hard to make sure that the young people of our county borough keep active.”
