County borough school launches activity scheme
30.10.2007
Lewis School Pengam has launched an initiative, which aims to get local people more active more often.
The LINC (Lewis IN the Community) project offers pupils and the wider community a variety of out-of-school-hours-based activities. So far the project has seen the introduction of a training session for Tir-y-Berth Ladies Football Club on Friday evenings. The Community University of the Valleys is also about to start up an IT class at the school, and Danstars a Street Dance class on Wednesday evenings.
Lewis School Pengam has been working hard to develop LINC since the beginning of the year. Assistant Head, Mike Oliver, has been developing the project with Community Focused Schools Coordinator, Claire Williams, and they have been promoting it together in the local community.
An official launch of the initiative, which coincided with an open evening for Year 6 pupils and parents to see the facilities on offer at the school and to sample the new LINC activities, took place last week (Monday 23rd October). The evening was a resounding success with over 350 people attending.
Head Teacher, Dr Howard, gave his full support to the LINC Project on the night and encouraged parents to try the various activities provided by the many partner organisations present. Taster sessions included Make Up & Beauty, Arts & Crafts, Creative Writing and IT which were provided by Community Education and the Genesis Project. Lego Robots and Costume Design workshops were provided by University College Newport, pottery by ‘Ave a Go Ceramics, and Street Dance by the 5x60 scheme and Danstars. There were also information stands from GAVO, Welsh Development, Gwent Police, and the Community University of the Valleys.
Many of these activities will start up at the school in November and everyone is welcome to attend. For further information about LINC and the activities on offer through the initiative, please contact Mike Oliver on 01443 873873 or Claire Williams, Community Focused Schools Coordinator on 01495 230067.
