Youngsters leap into Leadership
30.10.2007
Caerphilly county borough council is providing young people with the first step on the coaching ladder.
During half term the council’s sports development team is hosting a week of leadership training, including Community Sports Leaders, Dragon Sport Organiser and Dance Leader qualifications.
More than 50 young people will attend the week-long programme at St Cenydd Leisure Centre in Caerphilly. The scheme is working in partnership with the 5x60 programme, a school-based initiative aimed at getting more young people physically active by offering a wide range of recreational activities.
The courses require the young leaders to undertake voluntarily work to gain experience. They will do this by assisting and leading on a number of sports development programmes, including the 5x60 projects.
Cllr David Hardacre, cabinet member for education and leisure said, “It is essential that young people are given the opportunity to gain qualifications in leadership. Without young coaches and leaders our programme would not be successful. Following their qualification they will be given the chance to work on our programmes as volunteers and gain valuable experience.”
Caerphilly Sports Development is continually working to give people the opportunity to get involved in sport and physical activity.
