Risca netball stars net first in Wales accreditation

Everyone at Risca RFC Netball Club are celebrating their success after the club became the first in Wales to achieve the Welsh Netball Association’s prestigious Silver Club Mark Award.

The award was presented to the club at Cwmbran Stadium before the Netball Super-league match, which took place between Wales’ premier ladies team – the Celtic Dragons and England’s Mavericks. Prior to the presentation ceremony, Risca’s under 14s played an invitation match against Cwmbran under 14s. During a tense game the Risca team eventually came from behind in the third quarter winning 7 - 4.

Risca’s Youth Coach, Sally Walters said, “This was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to play in a big arena. Netball is a fantastic game for girls and the club has great team spirit. We have over 70 girls, between the ages of 7 and 17, who train and play netball every week.”

Jackie Richards, Vice Chair of the Club explained why the award was so important, “The Club Mark Award was launched by the Welsh Netball Association to ensure that clubs maintain good standards of coaching and organisation in their netball activities. The award is recognition of all the hard work that volunteers at all levels put into the club.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s, Sports Development Team have made a commitment to the development of clubs across the county borough.

Cllr David Hardacre, Cabinet Member for Education and Leisure said, “Risca Netball Club’s achievements are an excellent example of the way clubs can provide high quality sporting environments for young people and adults alike. Many National Governing Bodies for Sport are introducing accreditation schemes. Caerphilly Sports Development Team is dedicated to helping clubs achieve these high standards.”
