Karate club’s birthday boost for charity

The Karate club presents the cheque to the Mayor

03.01.2008

A Pontllanfraith karate club celebrated its 25th anniversary by providing a cash boost for the Mayor’s charity.

Instructors, students, friends and family came together with the Mayor of Caerphilly county borough, Cllr. Allen Williams for a night of fun and excitement, where Kyokushin karate topped the bill to raise a whopping £1,006 for the Charity Appeal.

The charity demonstration event was held at the Pontllanfraith Civic Centre and attracted around 120 students and supporters. The evening was a great success and included junior and senior club members demonstrating their Karate skills which included the popular tile & wood breaking techniques and an ice breaking demonstration.

Pontllanfraith Kyokushin has been active fund raisers for many different charities and causes including Cancer Research, Meningitis Research, Special Care Unit, Macmillan Nurses, Disadvantaged Children, Princess Diana fund, Tsunami Fund and many more.

Established in June 1982, Pontllanfraith Kyokushin club is a well-respected and popular group. Run by Steve Parry (4th Dan), the club holds regular karate classes at Pontllanfraith leisure centre for young and old alike. Senior student classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and junior classes every Thursday evening and Saturday morning.

Over the past 25 years the club has nurtured strong associations with the school, leisure centre and staff. An important aspect of the close bond is through the pupils of the local schools who over the many years have at one time or another participated in the activity of Kyokushin Karate which is widely recognised as the ‘strongest form of karate’ owing to it’s founder Mas Oyama and the many feats of strength demonstrated by his Karate skills.

Pontllanfraith Kyokushin are committed to turning out the best they can and with the support of the local community look forward to many successful years ahead. For further information about Kyokushin classes contact Pontllanfraith Leisure Centre on 01495 224562.
