Disability 6 Nations event - Trinity Fields School

Pupils at the 6 nations event with Ryan Jones

25.03.2008

Over 90 young people had the opportunity to experience the thrills of rugby, develop new skills and make new friends, when Trinity Fields School in Ystrad Mynach hosted the annual ‘Six Nations Disability Event’.

The success of this event has grown in popularity and for the first time this year, nine schools took part in the event, meaning the event ran a Tri -nations alongside the traditional Six Nations spectacular. Following on from the recent success of the national team; Captain of the Welsh squad Ryan Jones joined the event to display the prestigious Six-Nations trophy and lend his long-standing support.

This is the third year Ospreys player has attended the event and is an inspiration to those who had the opportunity to take part. Ryan encouraged the young people to try new things including hitting tackle bags, playing rugby and rolling in the mud and enjoyed watching them develop in confidence throughout the day. The sensory experience of the activities are a great benefit for young people with disabilities. St Julian's School, Newport, as Italy, won the Six-Nations cup and St.Cenydd Comprehensive, Caerphilly representing South Africa won the Tri-nations.

The popularity of this event is testament to the work of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Disability Sports Development Officer, Paul Taylor and the WRU Rugby Development Officers from CCBC and Newport CC. The event is sponsored by local company Orange Box, who are keen to see the development of disability sport, now in their third year of sponsorship their commitment has provided equipment for the event, training for staff and kit for each of the competing teams in the colours of the 6 nations countries.
