At Llancaiach Fawr we are fully committed to the encouragement of lifelong learning and offer a range of educational and learning opportunities for schools, families and adult learners. We support formal studies at all Key Stages as well as vocational learning for schools and colleges. Day courses are arranged for informal adult learners throughout the year.

Pupils exploring Llancaiach Fawr history

Our learning programme is under continual development to maximise the learning potential of tours, activities, trails and workshops for all ages and abilities at Llancaiach Fawr, in both the Manor house and the wider site. We focus on active and sensory learning with an emphasis on learning through doing and education through enjoyment. We offer a “hands-on” and “minds-on” learning experience catering for various learning styles and intelligences, recognising that active learning takes place with interaction, involvement and participation.

For Schools there are several options

For Foundation/Early Years and KS1 we offer a tour of the Manor with costumed staff and a simple introduction to life in the past.

For KS2 History we routinely theme the tour to Tudors, Stuarts, Houses & Households or famous local people. Craft activities, workshops and other themes are available on request.

For KS3 we cover the impact of the Civil War, often using the theme of “Surgeons and Sweethearts” to emphasise the differences between life in the 17th century and the instant and constant communications young people enjoy today.
We can also offer more in depth workshops and direct participation by students by request.

Educational Resources

The Gift Shop stocks a wide range of books and other items linked to life in the 16th and 17th centuries.
There is also a range of text and display materials specific to Llancaiach which is suitable for pre- and post-visit work.

Vocational learning

We welcome groups of Student teachers to tour the Manor and talk to our staff about the effectiveness of various forms of interpretation as well as the materials we use for teaching history and other subjects.

For students of Leisure and Tourism we offer tours and talks based on “The Business of Llancaiach” and “Animation & Entertainment in Tourism”

For Welsh Baccalaureate students we offer specially tailored tours and workshops.

Work experience and placements are also available.

We also welcome volunteers for training as costumed interpreters or for training and experience in other aspects of both the learning and events programme of Llancaiach Fawr.

Adult learners and the local community

Llancaiach Fawr organises practical and academic courses on various topics throughout the year. Previous themes have included Natural Dyeing Workshops, 17th Century Fashion and Clothing, Etiquette and The Chain of Being.

We also work with local historical, needlework and other groups to stage Special Event Days throughout the year.

We welcome community groups who wish to use Llancaiach Fawr as a venue for regular meetings and we also host AGM’s, Civic functions, Conferences, Concerts, Rallies, regional, national and international meetings.

We are fully committed to developing a sense of ownership of Llancaiach Fawr within the local community of which we hope to be viewed as an integral part.

With this in mind

  • We stage certain events free of charge primarily for local residents.
  • We are in the process of developing a Reminiscence Project based on local memories of Llancaiach Fawr when it was still a working farm.
  • We are also developing our knowledge and care for our wildlife and surrounding environment.
