Local & Community News
Autumn 2007

Loops and Links

Loops and Links is a project which opens up accessibility to the National Cycle Network – known as the Celtic Trail – between Risca and Nelson.  Artworks developed locally have been placed along the route, some of which were initially carved by local residents and visitors at Llancaiach over Kings Weekend 2006.

A Commemorative Book entitled Linking your Communities has just been published showing photos of the work in progress at Llancaiach and the accompanying leaflets give more information about each of the 10 communities along the route.  See weblinks.

Autumn History Conference

An inaugural “Autumn History Conference”, held jointly with the Museums & Heritage Service of Caerphilly CBC, was hosted by Llancaiach Fawr on 29th September.
It was organised by the Chairman of Gelligaer Historical Society, Mr Terry McCarthy and over 100 local historians and members of the public attended.  The interesting and diverse programme of topics proved to be highly informative and thought-provoking. Speakers included Professor Bernard Jenkins and Wayne David, MP and topics varied from the development of the new County museum at Elliot Colliery Winding House, to Ruperra Castle Conservation Trust, the Milestones of Gwent and the tribal princes of Senghenydd Supra and their descendents.
It is hoped that this will be the first in a long line of annual local history conferences.

This was followed by Llancaiach’s own annual Family and Local History Day on 7th October, which provided visitors with the opportunity to uncover the history of their local area as well as picking up advice on how to delve deep into their family’s past.

Don’t forget that our Reminiscence Project is still looking for your memories of Llancaiach Fawr before it became a museum.  Contact Emma Wilson if you have memories to share.

The Big Draw

The Campaign for Drawing’s nationwide event, The Big Draw, arrived at Llancaiach in October. Each weekend, visitors young and old were encouraged to take inspiration from their surroundings, the 17th century characters in the Manor, artefacts from our Handling Collections and portraits to create their own ‘work of art’ with charcoal and chalk.  The event proved to be popular with families, providing an enjoyable artistic addition to their day out!

A Warm Welcome!

Developing a strong sense of local ownership and community involvement is vital to us all at Llancaiach Fawr Manor. Therefore, we are delighted that we now provide a venue for regular meetings of three local organisations.  In the Education Centre Bargoed & District Arts Society meet every Tuesday evening, Rhymney Valley Lacemakers meet every Thursday evening and Gelligaer Historical Society now hold their monthly talks in the Barn on the last Wednesday of each month.
