Schools

There is frequently more to be learned from the unexpected questions of a child than the discourses of men.

John Locke
(1632- 1704)

A visit to Llancaiach Fawr currently consists of a 1-1½ hour tour of our 16th century Manor. Costumed interpreters portraying the servants of Colonel Edward Prichard will whisk the group “back in time” to the year 1645, conveying daily life in Llancaiach Fawr in the midst of Civil War. Customs, manners, food, clothing, pastimes, and other aspects of daily social life in the 17th century are emphasised to create curriculum-linked opportunities for comparison and contrast with modern life. This can be at a basic level illustrating differences between ‘now and then’ for Key Stage 1 children, through to a more in-depth study of the politics behind the Civil War for Key Stage 3 students.

A visit to Llancaiach Fawr will be tailored to meet the needs of the group in question, whether it be Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 or a group with special educational needs. Timings and themes of the visit, where possible, can be adapted to better serve your group’s requirements. We promote active and sensory learning with an emphasis on both education and enjoyment.

Exhibition worksheets are available for downloading and photocopying prior to your visit.  Please click here. A range of fun learning trails are also available. We also have a large number of photographs of the Manor and its servants available on CD to assist with post-visit school project work. Detailed Teachers’ Notes are included.

Curriculum links

A visit to Llancaiach Fawr offers excellent learning opportunities for groups linked to the National Curriculum in both Wales and England.

There are many links to the National Curriculum for History through the information contained within the tour of the Manor but a visit can also be used to link with English, Science, Art and Mathematics through the study of the layout of the Manor and its gardens, the observation of pattern and shape within the Manor and its surroundings, and the study of materials and their properties. This is by no means an exhaustive list of the curriculum links a visit to Llancaiach Fawr can offer and we are continually developing new ways in which a visit can offer increasing relevance to schools.

Our expanding learning programme will be developing in line with the changes to the National Curriculum.

Craft Activities

School visits may include a craft–style activity as part of the tour of the Manor. Previous activities have included candle rolling and pomander making.

Currently, children can make their own “Plague Bag” to take home with them. This is a cross curricula activity linking to History, Science and PHSE, and is designed to introduce concepts of medicine and healthcare in the past and the self-sufficiency of an estate like Llancaiach Fawr, where the plants in the garden were grown for many different reasons. Children learn how herbs and plants had various properties which were thought to cure a range of ailments, as well as the prevailing 17th century ideas concerning the origins of the Plague.

Our craft activities will change regularly so please contact us for the most up to date information.

Handling Collections and Loan Service

The Handling Collections at Llancaiach Fawr Manor consist of a range of reproduction every-day objects similar to those used within the Manor house and wider society in the 16th and 17th centuries.

They are designed to encourage pupils/ groups to draw comparisons and make contrasts with modern equivalents as well as aiding with the development of a deeper understanding of daily life in the past.

Explanatory Teachers’ Notes are included with each loan box and may be photocopied for educational purposes. They include information about the objects within the handling collection and suggestions for activities in the classroom.

The Handling Collections are based on the following themes: Houses and Households, The Apothecary’s Medicine Chest, Toys and Past times, Fashion and Textiles and Reading, Writing and Education.

For information on the cost of hiring a loan box and the duration of the loan period, please contact us.

Prices

A tour of the Manor costs £4 per child.
A tour of the Manor with the craft activity costs £5 per child.

Due to the age of the Manor and the nature of the tour, for safety reasons we recommend that 1 adult is allocated to every 10 children, supervised at all times. Please note that these adults have free entry. For very young children and those with special needs we advise a higher ratio.

We can accommodate a maximum of 120 children in one booking. Please note that this number will be split into 3 (or where possible, 4) smaller groups during the tour of the Manor.
