Vocational / Adult“Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.” Ancient Chinese Proverb At Llancaiach Fawr we are fully committed to the encouragement of lifelong learning. We organise practical and academic courses on various topics throughout the year. Leisure & TourismFor students of Leisure & Tourism we offer tours and talks based on ‘The Business of Llancaiach’ with issues including communication, marketing and customer needs. We have also recently expanded this to include a presentation for students of “Animation and Entertainment in Tourism” concerning the effectiveness of the medium of living history and first person interpretation as an effective tool for communication, learning and visitor enjoyment. Work experience and placements are also available. We also welcome volunteers for training as costumed interpreters or for training and experience in other aspects of both the learning and events programme of Llancaiach Fawr. WELSH BAC STUDENTS WELCOME!We have successfully piloted an original programme relating to the recently introduced Welsh Baccalaureate qualification. The Welsh Bac has been designed to provide a broader learning experience for 14-19 year olds than traditional education programmes, and visits to museums, galleries and historic houses can play a very important role in helping to achieve this. As part of their Childcare studies, students from the Ebbw Vale campus of Coleg Gwent and students from Coleg Glan Hafren visited Llancaiach Fawr to find out how the treatment of children in the Tudor and Stuart period differed from today. A specially tailored tour of the Manor focused on attitudes towards children in the past, as well as how babies and very young children were cared for. Practical workshops followed which involved students guessing the uses of various “mystery objects” connected to children in the 16th and 17th centuries, learning how to wrap a baby in swaddling bands and also making their own 17th century style sleeping aid for babies. We have also welcomed students from Bridgend College who visited as part of their course on Beauty, to learn about beauty care, fashion and appearance in the Stuart period. Following a tour of the Manor which focused on these issues, the students then had the opportunity to create their own 17th century style beauty products, in the shape of a skin softening wash-ball, and a ‘perfume pouch’ similar to those used in the past to add fragrant aromas to clothes and the body itself. Following the success of these pilots and the positive feedback received from those involved we are pleased to offer these to other Welsh Bac groups and would also be interested in hearing from tutors who wish to work with us to develop other courses on specialist themes. Please contact Learning Officer, Emma Wilson, for further information. PricesFor Business and Welsh Bac tours/talks/workshops price is £4.50 per student. OtherPrevious courses and workshops have included Natural Dyeing, 17th century Fashion & Clothing and The Chain of Being. We have also hosted Drystone walling and Sugarcraft courses. Prices of adult learning courses vary so please contact us for further information.
