Welcome to
Llancaiach Fawr

The peaceful, rural setting of Llancaiach Fawr Manor gives no clue to the turmoil of its early years nor to the exciting Living History it now portrays.

Built in 1530 for Dafydd ap Richard it was designed to be easily defended during the turbulent reigns of Tudor kings and queens.

By the start of the Stuart dynasty the Prichards had prospered and the house was extended in 1628 to demonstrate their status

When Civil War broke out between King and Parliament in 1642 Colonel Prichard was actively involved in raising men and money for the Royalist cause in Glamorganshire.

The Manor House

Visitors today step into the Manor House restored and furnished as it was in 1645 when King Charles I came to visit and allegiances changed to Parliament.

The Master and his family are usually away from home but they leave the servants behind to welcome and guide you around the House and gardens.

See and hear how ordinary people lived in extraordinary times and the folklore and superstition which ruled their lives.

The Household Servants

Llancaiach Fawr Manor servants

The servants are always at the Manor House to greet you and make you welcome!

Although we can’t say which of them you’ll meet at any time (they have their duties to perform after all!), you can be sure that there will be someone who will be pleased to show you around the master’s fine house, provided that you are of good repute of course.

UpDATES for June

Something old…

The Antiques Fair organised by Amber Fairs on Spring Bank Holiday weekend proved very popular in spite of (or maybe because of) the appalling weather. Howling wind, lashing rain, fallen trees and flooded roads obviously do not deter those determined to search out particular antiques and collectables.

The organisers are now working with us to identify a date in autumn when we can do it again and details will be on the Events pages as soon as they are confirmed.

And something new…

The popularity of Ghost Tours and the big response to our recent Evenings of Clairvoyance have shown that there is ongoing interest in the spiritual and supernatural.
To complement our current range we now have a new event on 22nd June: Psychic Dinner with Gavin Cromwell who is Resident Psychic of Closer and OK magazines and Real Radio, together with Rob Armour, Spiritualist Medium.

Hurrah….

The scaffolding has finally been removed from the front of the Manor House following the completion of remedial works and no longer spoils the sense of stepping back in time to 1645.

New ‘servants’

Colonel Prichard has acquired some new servants in the Manor House. Click here for details

Learning Officer

We are happy to announce that Louise Griffith has been appointed to the post of Learning Officer. Louise has worked on placement at Llancaiach for some time so ensures continuity as well as bringing new commitment and energy to developing our education programmes.

No ‘Jottings’

There are no Jottings from the Potting Shed this month as Gary has been overwhelmed by the volume of work required in the garden.

Feedback

‘My son spent the day at the Manor today, a school trip, and had a wonderful time. He came home full of stories for us and begging us to go again soon. If you can impress a 7 year old you must be good!!!!’

Your comments

We always appreciate your feedback (see below) and a recent suggestion was that we include a floor plan of the Manor on this website. It will be coming soon!
