The Butcher

The Butcher - Samuel Fletcher

Perhaps Samuel Fletcher may have called into the Manor…

Samuel Fletcher is the village butcher.. but he also considers himself a Preacher, and you could well be treated to one of his sermons – for possibly an hour or more for he can be very zealous!

Originally from Tunbridge in Kent, he found his way to Wales just before the war began, hoping that the West would be safer than London, where he was then living. It was after the death of his wife that he left Tunbridge, to leave behind unhappy memories and make his way in the world.

He now lives in a cottage in Rhyd-y Grug, and regularly sells meat from home as well as at Caerphilly and sometimes Cardiff markets, butchering beasts for farmers as required. He also makes a little money from preaching- unofficially of course!

He is not however, as prosperous as he would like to be- but he sees a possible opportunity opening before him, for he has become very friendly with widow Sarah ‘Pen-y-Mynedd’, who sells pies at Caerphilly market. She gained a good inheritance from her late husband and the prospect of the match is very tempting. The difficulty is that she has other suitors so Samuel Fletcher must either work very hard to improve his offer or find some other cunning means to win her hand. Could you perhaps offer him any advice?
