Chief Chamber Maid
You’ll certainly know if Esther Gruffydd is about! The Chief Chamber-maid, she is always bustling about, busying herself (and others!) with cleaning, dusting and anything else she can find to do. Life is never dull with Esther in the house! Born at Milgarw Farm, at Trefil in the parish of Llangynidr in Breconshire, she met her first husband, Owain Llewellyn, when she went with her father to the Ffair-y-Waun, at Dowlais. Owain was a farmer, a tenant of Edward Prichard on his land at Dowlais, but they subsequently moved to Ffosgerdduon, near Llancaiach. Sadly, her beloved Owain was thrown from a horse and died of his injuries. However, she married again, this time to a drover, Iestyn Gruffydd. Whether this marriage is quite as blissful, you must judge for yourself – Iestyn has a liking for good strong cider, as Esther will freely tell you! Esther is very superstitious, although not so affeared as some folk may be of witches. Some of the women in her family have been considered as “Wraig Hysbys” or “Wise Women”. However, just to be on the safe side, she always wears her petticoats inside out – no sense in taking any chances! |
