Childrens's Maid
Anne Gibbard looks after Colonel Prichard’s daughters, Jane and Mary. The family wanted a servant of quality to bring up their offspring and so they chose Anne, who comes from a good family in Briton Ferry.
Her father is a silversmith and earns enough to keep Anne but he believes that going into service with the Prichard family will be a good education for her. Also, to be connected to the Prichards in such a way is a good thing for the reputation of the Gibbard family!
Anne can be stern and serious sometimes as she must set a good example to the children, however she still has a sense of fun and will often make up games and stories for the girls.
Anne can read and write, unusual for a woman in service, but her father wanted her to be able to read the bible, as well as being able to help the girls in learning to read and write with the aid of their horn books.
When the children are away from the house and Anne is left behind she can often be found in the kitchens perfecting recipes for the girls that she thinks are better suited, as she believes that the Head Cook’s dishes leave a lot to be desired! |
