Under Laundress

Under laundress - Hannah Saer

Buxom Hannah Saer might be found amid the bucks, buckets and soap…

For Hannah is the household’s Under Laundress. Because the Chief Laundress, Rachel Morgan, has such a good hand with fine lace and fabrics, she is more often than not away with Mistress Prichard, attending to her costly clothes. This leaves poor Hannah to deal with the rest of the household’s linen!

However, she keeps herself cheerful and thanks to Esther Gruffydd’s secret receipt (involving goose-grease, certain herbs and something unmentionable!), she manages to keep her hands soft.

Hannah loves dancing and always looks forward to those celebrations, particularly May-day, when she can kick up her heels and whirl merrily about the village green hand in hand with some handsome young man, to the jolly tunes of the day. She certainly hopes that the Royalists will win this War as she has heard it rumoured that if the more Puritanical members of the Parliamentarian side have their way, they would ban all such celebrations – even Christmas! Life would be very dull!

Of course there are those in the village who might say that Hannah’s love of dancing owes less to her joy in celebration and more to the handsome young men – but we’ll leave that to the gossips!
