Needlewoman
You may well meet Elisabeth Proude…A rather prim sort of person – until she lets down her guard! She is the wife of a cattle drover, Iestyn Proude. Because he is so often away from home trying to find markets for the Colonel’s cattle, she is frequently to be found in the Manor carrying out all sorts of work, usually sewing. Because her husband doesn’t like her to stay alone in their own home on the mountain with so many deserters etc. abroad, he has arranged with the Colonel that she should come to the Manor for her safety when Iestyn is away. Edward Prichard knows better than to refuse – a good and honest drover isn’t always easy to find! She is a skilled needlewoman so of great value to Mistress Prichard. She is also from the county of Surrey and so Mrs. P. likes to hear tales about the nobility Elisabeth has seen when she was a girl, as they “progressed” from one palace to another during the summer months. How did she come to be living in South Wales? Well, you’ll have to ask her! |
