Serving Man
Then of course, there’s John Davies, one of the Household Serving Men… John Davies found his way into the employment of Edward Prichard through the recommendation of Stephan Matthias, something that Stephan may now regret to some degree as John Davies has perhaps a little too much of a liking for frequenting the tavern. Worse, he encourages other members of the Household to accompany him! ( Although it must be said that Siencyn rarely needs much encouragement!) As the son of one of the Agents of the Morgan Household at Ruperra, it might be thought that John Davies would have had greater ambition for his life, but sadly the thought of study in any form was not something that appealed in any measure to either John or his brothers. The war therefore, seemed like an opportunity for adventure and all three joined the army in support of the King. However, the adventure soon turned sour for him when he witnessed the true hardships and horrors of war. After John Davies saw Mistress Prichard’s uncle decapitated by chain shot and then was himself injured so badly that he had to be left behind after the disastrous second battle at Newbury, he became so disillusioned that he never wanted to fight again. It may be this that makes him take solace at the tavern… but it might also be that John Bevan the Brewer is reputed to make the finest strong ale in the county… who knows? You’ll just have to come to Llancaiach and ask him. |
