Students Build an Otter Holt in Waunfawr Park.

Earlier this year students from Cross Keys College came to Waunfawr Park to build an otter holt with John Bell from Keep Wales Tidy and Dave Beveridge Urban Environment Awareness Officer for Caerphilly County Borough Council. John told the students all about otters and described what the task would involve and Dave started to cut down a few Sycamore trees to be use in the day’s activities.

First of all there was a little matter of crossing the river. A professional ropes man set a line across the river and the entire group crossed safely, one at a time.

Work soon got underway with bush saws and teamwork.

Taking shape, the students stop to admire their work. The chambers in the Holt try to replicate the natural chambers in the roots of a riverside tree, the natural holt of the otter.

The finished result is a home for our otters that will blend away into the scenery.
A job well done!
