'Green' facelift planned for derelict play area

(19.07.2007)

Plans are underway to regenerate a former play area next to a busy road junction in Glan-Y-Nant, Pengam.

The scheme to create a new public space will incorporate recycling and sustainability into its design, creating a more attractive, usable area for local residents.

The project will also create cleaner, greener surroundings as well as aiming to provide a safer setting for nearby residents and deterring anti-social behaviour.

Caerphilly County Borough Council will be looking to the local community, including pupils at Lewis School Pengam, to play a lead role in generating ideas and putting forward suggestions for the design and implementation of the scheme, with the main theme being ‘local history’.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Housing, Cllr David Poole, said, “This project is a good example of our commitment to improve the quality of the local environment for residents.

“The most important part of this scheme is the plan to involve the community in the project. We want schoolchildren to take ownership of the scheme and help create designs relating to the history of the local area. This will hopefully encourage them - and their families - to enjoy and respect the area in the long-term. It will also give the children the opportunity to learn about how being sustainable can directly benefit their community,” he added.
