Everything will be coming up roses this summer in Caerphilly‘s fantastic Flower Festival celebrating beautiful blooms.
Flower fans will be able to take in the sites from a special open-topped bus laid on for free during the festival and children can discover their green fingers with the ‘pot-a-plant’ event or get a floral face painting session.
Churches and other buildings in the town will be festooned with flowers during the festival, organised jointly by Caerphilly county borough council’s tourism and park services departments, which runs from 10:00am to 4:00pm on Friday 6th July to Saturday 7th July. Displays will be on show thanks to all the hard work of church and community groups who have been busy bees, beavering away behind the scenes.
A free open topped bus will run from the Twyn community centre to the churches through out the day. There will also be activities for children and a display of miniature "gardens in wheelbarrows" that have been created by local schools. The Twyn Car Park will host a continental market as well as craft stalls.
The churches taking part are: St Helens, St Catherine’s, St Martins, Wesley Methodist and United Reformed churches. They offer refreshments. The shuttle bus, laid on by the county borough council, leaving Twyn Car Park throughout the day will drop site-seers off at churches along the flower festival route to see the displays.
The Twyn Community Centre will feature displays from Caerphilly Floral Society display, Caerphilly Horticultural Society display, Glyn Deri Bonsai Club display (all in the main hall); Caerphilly Camera Club (upstairs); a demonstration by Glyn Deri Bonsai Club and sales by Caerphilly Horticultural Society plant sales (both outside). Countryside Services Bio Diversity Group will show you how to create a wildlife garden on an outside stall. The face painting and children’s pot-a-plant will also take place outside the community centre.
In the Tourist Information Centre gardening expert Roger Crookes will give some expert advice with his "The Doctors Here to Help" session and Bedwas Arts Centre personnel will show a floral painting display.
Coupled with the Caerphilly flower Festival will be the second Continental Market to come to the town this year at the Twyn Car Park where produce from different European countries ranging from wine to cheese will be on offer. There will also be an ice cream van there.
Donations from £150 to £250 have been provided to churches or groups to pay for the displays. For more information on any of the above ring the Tourist Information Centre on 029 2088 0011.
