Partnership leads to park success

(25.09.2008)

A disused section of a popular community park in Crosskeys has been officially opened following a major facelift. The area, within Waunfawr Park, has been transformed thanks to the efforts of a successful partnership project involving a number of local agencies.

The Mayor of Caerphilly county borough, Cllr Anne Collins, was invited to officially open the new facility this week, which includes new bike routes, an outdoor classroom, enhanced public spaces and a special cabin housing toilets, office space and other facilities.

"This exciting new development will provide many benefits to the local community and it is particularly encouraging to see facilities for school children and people with disabilities," said Cllr Colins, "It just goes to show what can be achieved when we all pull together and I would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in this fantastic project."

For the last three years, Caerphilly County Borough Council's parks department have been working with the local community and partner groups to improve the site. The partner groups involved in the exciting scheme are Waunfawr Primary school, Brooklands Adult Centre in Risca, Gwent Probation Service, Groundwork Trust, Crosskeys Brownies, Crosskeys voluntary gardening group and members from the local community.

The area is now regularly used by a number of community groups, especially Waunfawr Primary school who use it as an outdoor classroom and Brooklands Adult Centre in Risca who use specially adapted bikes to ride around Waunfawr park.

The voluntary gardening group based at the site have recently received funding from The Wales Environment Trust for a purpose built cabin which includes an office, disabled toilet and kitchen.
