Blackwood Road, Pontllanfraith NP12 2YW.
Located outside the Council Offices at Pontllanfraith, the 4.5-hectare area is made up of grassland divided by hedgerows, a wetland area adjacent to the River Sirhowy and several footpaths. The majority of the site (3.4ha) has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in recognition of its nature conservation value, as a remnant of a traditionally managed hay meadow. The area has retained locally rare notable plant species, such as Greater Burnet, Lady's Mantle and Bistort. The wetland area contains a variety of species including orchids.
To ensure conservation of the sites rich flora, grass management undertaken now is designed to mirror the original pattern of farming when the area was used for summer grazing by cattle and hay was collected for use as winter feed for the livestock.
