As much a country park as urban green space, a modern children’s playground, youth facilities and sports pitch, combined with a diverse range of natural habitats has created a unique and quite delightful public open green space.
The site was originally part of Nelson Bog and a stone quarry with railway sidings. The football pitch was first to be developed on reclaimed land in 2000, and the rest of the park was gradually acquired and grew around that. Nelson Wern is a country park in an urban setting. A well designed and attractive children’s playground together with a skateboard facility, BMX track and youth shelter draw in youngsters from the local community.
Pieces of creative artwork within the park provide additional interest for visitors. The children’s play area has an amphitheatre overlooking it so parents have a focal point to catch up with each other while their children play. The football pitch is used by Nelson Cavaliers, an ambitious club aiming for league status.
Visitors to the park are rewarded with a relaxing experience as they walk through swathes of wild flower meadows and through the wet woods over a boardwalk. The park is managed with nature in mind and the woods have Site of importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) status, and are teeming with wildlife.
Why not take a self-guided walk through the park and admire the orchids, dragonflies, butterflies and birds?
There is even the chance of sighting the elusive otter.
