Other places to visit

After exploring Gelligaer there are many more places that you can visit – for a breath of fresh air or a heritage injection.

The nearest attraction is Llancaiach Fawr Manor – where you can explore life in 1645. Llancaiach Fawr played a key part in the excavation of Gelligaer, as it was hear that Rev T.J. Jones met members of the Cardiff Naturalists’ Society and persuaded them to visit the site.

Also nearby is Parc Penallta, where the remains of the areas mining industry has been reshaped to create a country park with a magnificent “Highpoint” observatory which gives spectacular views across the valleys and the stunning vision of 'Sultan' the UK's largest figurative earth sculpture.

Another important place to visit is the Winding House, where you can explore the story of the area and also see some of the finds uncovered at Gelligaer.
