Citizens Advice work in partnership with local authority Trading Standards services by providing first level advice and information on a wide range of consumer problems. Only complaints requiring further investigation or assistance are referred to Trading Standards or other advice services.

What if the helpline can't help me?

In cases where the helpline are unable to assist a consumer in resolving an issue, or where consumers are particularly vulnerable, the matter is referred to us at Trading Standards.

Our experienced Consumer Advisors are able to use their technical and legal skills to take the complaint further. This can involve mediating on the consumers behalf or arbitrating a resolution to the problem. Where an impasse situation is reached, assistance may be given in the preparation of a small claim action in the county court (up to a limit of £5000). However, the outcome of such action can never be guaranteed.
