Compost at home

The average person throws away seven times their own body weight in waste every year. About 25% of the contents of your bin are kitchen scraps and garden waste. These are organic materials that end up at landfill sites where they cause polluting gases.

Composting at home will help reduce the amount of waste you put out for collection, meaning you'll have less rubbish to store until bin day – particularly useful if you're tight on space – because nature will have started the process of recycling some of it for you. Bacteria, fungi and invertebrates break down organic waste, converting it into a rich and useful soil-like material. Making compost at home will keep you supplied with free compost - of great benefit to your garden and plants.

The benefits of home composting

Composting diverts organic waste from landfill and helps to reduce the build up of green house gasses such as methane.
Compost is rich in nutrients and can provide an excellent soil conditioner for your garden. Its free and good compost is a complete fertiliser for all plants and vegetables. It provides basic plant food and a soil conditioner called humus, which improves both soil fertility and structure.
Compost can be used instead of environmentally harmful fertilizers and peat.

Purchasing a compost bin

We offer our residents the opportunity to purchase home composting bins at a subsidised price.

The home composting units have a hatch at the base and a lid at the top and come in two sizes:

220 litres
330 litres

Both compost containers cost only £10. If you would like to purchase a compost bin, just come along to any of our cash offices to pay the £10 fee. You will be given a receipt by the cashier which you then need to take along to the official collection point at Blackwood Garden Centre, Blackwood, NP12 0PJ (Rear of Blackwood RFC) .

Alternatively, you can pay an additional £5 and your compost bin will be delivered to you.
