Primary and secondary school admissions

There are currently 95 schools in the area. Contact details for all our schools is available using our Find a School search facility.

Admissions will be allocated in line with the School Admissions Criteria, which you should read before applying.

School Admissions Criteria

Each school has a limit to the number of children it is able to admit. Once this limit has been reached, no further children can be admitted to that school.

Children, who live in the school's catchment area, and whose parents have expressed a preference, will be offered places first. Should the number of applications to a school from within the catchment area be greater than the number of places available, the following priority criteria will apply. When these children have been identified, the allocation of any remaining places will be allocated according to the same criteria which are listed below in priority order:

  • Children recommended for placement for medical, psychological or special educational reasons. This must be confirmed by the LEA's professional advisers
  • Children with siblings (brothers and sisters) living in the same household who will be attending the same school
  • After taking account of the above categories, priority will be based on the closeness to the school measured by the council's GIS (Geographical Information System) database

When considering whether a child lives in a school's catchment area, the address considered is that of the parent or legal guardian, irrespective of the family's domestic arrangements. In other words, the address of another relative or childminder etc. must not be given.

Applying for a place at a school
