Conservation of the built environment

There are historic sites and buildings right across Caerphilly county borough, which form an integral part of the everyday environment we experience and enjoy. This built heritage not only enhances the character of our area but also plays a key role in the sustainable regeneration of our local economy and environment.

Listed buildings
There are currently 411 listed buildings within the county borough.  A 'listed building' is a building, object or structure that has been judged to be of national historical or architectural interest. The council are responsible for considering applications to demolish a listed building or for any alteration or extension that would affect its character as a building of architectural or historic interest.
Conservation areas
There are 16 conservation areas across the county borough, which help to protect the local environment. They have special architectural or historic interest so their character and appearance should be preserved or even enhanced.
Scheduled ancient monuments
There are 47 scheduled ancient monuments in Caerphilly county borough. Scheduling provides statutory protection and the current legislation, the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, supports a formal system of Scheduled Monument Consent for any works to a designated monument.
Historic parks and gardens
There are several historic parks and gardens in the county borough each contributing to the setting of historic, listed buildings, and are valued as 'works of art', perhaps by a well known designer, or for their horticultural interest or association with a notable person or event.
Historic landscapes
There are a host of different types of historic landscapes in Caerphilly county borough that have evolved by thousands of years of interaction of humans with the natural environment.
