There is a proposed 2.2 hectare retail development site to the rear of Hanbury Road. Material will be excavated from the Bargoed Colliery tip and used to construct the new plateau.
The council is currently buying a number of properties in Hanbury Road, with the help of funding from the Heads of the Valleys Programme, to facilitate the retail development.
There has been considerable interest in the site from major retailers. The council and the Welsh Government, working in partnership, have commissioned consultants to attract a private sector partner to develop the site. The Council is currently negotiating with developer Simons and detailed plans of the scheme should become available shortly. It is anticipated that the retail development will not be completed until 2011 at the earliest. The impressive Bargoed Newydd Viaduct has recently opened and links the communities of Aberbargoed and Bargoed. This 200m viaduct is designed to provide access to this proposed retail development from the southern end and forms part of the Angel Way Road scheme.
